heh heh heh.....

I have the beginnings of my next project.... Modifying an O.S. FS52 with some FS40S-C parts to make the "FS52S-C", and cramming the end result into a REVO!!!

I'll replace the stock carb with the .21 slide carb from my old GS Storm RTR engine, put .40C valve springs, spring seats, and cam in the .52 (maybe make some aluminum push rods too) -- My hope is for it to be very comparable to sicko big-block 2 strokes, power-wise. Reliability and ease of tuning will be it's strong points, aside from the torqy power and cool sound.

I picked up the cam and springs tonight. ph34r.gif
The engine should be here later this week. dry.gif
The spring seats are on back-order. sad.gif

That sounds awesome!

DP you have way 2 much time on your hands. Sould be cool.....

Are you bringing out that 12th scale tomorrow? yeah.gif

I think I'll bring the 2mod buggy and Mini-T on Friday. tongue.gif
TheTurtleman
You should bring your 12th scale. Most of the guys over here that were running buggy we talked itto getting 12th scales.... yeah.gif

I think I need to put a motor in my rc18t before I run it again. Its not that fun w/ the stock motor when it handles so good.

You still have your F1?
DP-BuggyBoy
Still have my F-201, it needs a rear hub though. If you're getting rid of your RC18 motor, bring it Friday so I can put it in my Mini-T. The poor old Mini-T motor is pretty much dead. laugh.gif It has been 7-celled it to death!

I can't race the 1/12th scale without getting really serious (parts, spare parts, spare motors, body, my batteries are old....), and I will most likely be picking up that FS-52 Friday, so Mini-T or Heavy Metal class will be the cheapest way for me to race. Cheap is good right now.

I have a hub for your F1 I can give ya. Email me Friday so I will remember to throw it in. The best bang fot the buck is the Venom mini fireball motor. I think they are 15$, and are pretty fast...
DP-BuggyBoy
WAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! the .40C cam is a drop-in fit in the .52! I figured it would be. Now if those darn spring retainers would show up....

Oh yeah, I got the engine...
chaosxxx-nt
sweet when you get it up and running that thing is gonna be down right beastly what kind of pipe can you use with it i bet if you ran an outlaw exaust that thing would sound really cool. here is the buggy pipe for that should work for the big four shouldnt it?

user posted image

or there is a pipe specifically desighned for the revo but it may be to restrictive for a big 4 stroke but it will be cool for the stock revo i think

user posted image
DP-BuggyBoy
I'll need some sort of muffler for it. Problem is the exhaust comes off a completely different place on the engine than a 2 stroke exhaust, so there's probably not anything premade that will just fit. I'll see when I get to it. ph34r.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
Still waiting for those spring retainers.... In the mean-time, the flywheel/clutch issue is stirring in my head. Pretty sure I'll need to replace the current thrust washer with a custom flywheel/pulley. That way, I can reduce the length of the big engine. The shorter it is, the less I have to modify the REVO. I also found a way that I can avoid having to modify the crankshaft, which involves cutting the threads off of part of the inside of the clutch nut. That way, I just need to cut the crankshaft to the right length, as with any other engine.

Oh... and the intake manifold... to fit the HUGE .21 slide carb, I'll be machining my own intake manifold. This one will be straight, and I'm pretty sure I can make it with the lathe and drill press. unsure.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
PICTURES!!!!!!!!!
1 stripped down REVO and 1 BIG-A$$ engine!!!

[attachmentid=99]

[attachmentid=100]

One word: SICK

It's so nice working with a new *CLEAN* kit!!
.. Oh yeah, and the valve spring retainers got here today as well! ph34r.gif
chaosxxx-nt
so all you have to do is slap that puppy together and put it on the top of a large antenna then wait for a thunderstorm and your frankenstien monster revo will dominate! yeah.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
Yeah... It's going to be SICK!! ph34r.gif

Ran into a little roadblock with the engine today.... .40C valve springs don't fit!! DREMEL to the rescue!!! That, and some 3/16" losi axle shims to get the proper spring preload, and it's fully modded!!! ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif

Think a .52 4 stroke that will turn 20- 25K RPM and put out 1.5 - 2HP and a butt-load of torque!

The numbers aren't that impressive, but wait till you see it on the track! ohmy.gif

/edit/ - Engine is done. Next: engine mount. Ugh.... Why did Traxxas make that thing so complicated? Good thing my brother's got his eyes glued on a CNC mill! He's so serious, the place he's getting it from is going to let him program and run a part on it!! He wants to do the engine mount!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I still have to design and draw it up for him...
DP-BuggyBoy
NEW Pictures!! I figured out the stock exhaust header will be perfect... Also made a rough mock-up engine mount! Also, the engine will be laid over even more than the stock REVO engine is. OK, so here's the pics:
[attachmentid=102][attachmentid=101][attachmentid=103]
If you're wondering WTF I'm doing with the clutch bell... It's just there for sizing, not functional.

/edit/ - MAKING PROGRESS!

Here's top, left, and front view drawings without dimensions. Now, I just need a machinist! laugh.gif My brother didn't think I'd have it drawn this fast... Dashed gray lines are hidden lines.

Hey Damon, looking good!

Thought you might like this. Someone from the Traxxas board found your little project and posted it then the dung storm started.

http://monster.traxxas.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=269953
DP-BuggyBoy
Roy, THAT'S FUNNY AS HELL!! I love trolls! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Seriously though, for anyone coming from the Traxxas forums, this is for real... REAL FUN! No, I don't know how well it will work, but if the 4 stroke gas truck is any indicator, the power should be VERY GOOD, and very raceable.

On another note, I have already entered the REVO in round 1 of the Northwest Championship Series HERE. It's legal in the Super Monster Truck class. biggrin.gif ph34r.gif Now I have a deadline of April 16 to get it in race-shape. I just ordered an Airtronics 94358Z servo, cooling fan, and oscillating pump just to make sure the pressure's on me! yeah.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
UPDATE... little one, but anyway... Back on this post, I added the third and final view of the engine mount.

/update to the update to the update to the...../

Started designing and drawing up the flywheel and discovered there isn't enough room for... oh, let's say the clutch nut. Needless to say, I forgot about that little issue. I could cut new threads on the crankshaft.... rolleyes.gif or move the REVO's tranny forward about 3/16". The engine is already really close to the rear arm, so I can't just move it back more.

AND, the front driveshaft is compressed all the way from the factory. Not to mention, it's a short little bugger. Roy knows about that, since he had to fit a one-way in there to make his Quick Turn.

I think I'll first try cutting the stock drive shaft halves so it will be shorter, then the tranny can move forward and the flywheel and clutch nut will be happy. Bad news is that if I want to get a Quick Turn, I'd also need the *not-for-sale-yet* extended chassis I have heard about to make it fit. That might end up being a good thing though, handling-wise. yeah.gif
willsoffe
Hey,

The tranny slides forward a fair bit. I had to for my Picco P2 (darn New Era Kit and bent chassis huh.gif )

I had to slot the holes where it bolts in (duh lol) I had to dremel A bit off of the tranny skid and dremel a little corner bit on the chassis that stuck out (you will see what i mean!)

If I can do it you should be able to do it with your eyes shut lol

Will
Heffe55
LOL Damon now with the rest of the country or world lookin at your project no pressure......lmao and I guess we will be getting more updates...lol Stick with it bud I know you can pull it off and come up with a sick truck......... You gonna make it to the next few races at NW..... if so see you there. I could use another butt kickin in mini t on friday.....

Be careful what you wish for... ph34r.gif

I successfully moved the tranny forward a full 1/4 inch!! I didn't even need to modify the driveshaft like I thought! Now there's plenty of room for the clutch. OK, just barely enough room.

Here's a preview of the flywheel/thrust washer/fan pulley that makes it possible to fit all that stuff into something that's only 8.5mm thick:
[attachmentid=98]
That thing on the right is the clutch bell.
DP-BuggyBoy
OK, I found a machinist who will make the engine mount! I need to make some changes to my drawings tonight when I get home, then bring them back to him tomorrow morning. biggrin.gif yeah.gif My brother will still make one on the CNC machine, because he still needs a part to test it with. That means I will most likely end up with a spare whenever he tests that mill, probably a few weeks. smile.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
All this waiting is driving me crazy! blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

Yup. Still waiting.
DP-BuggyBoy
Hmmm.. still waiting, but not very patiently. I may actually have permanent access to a CNC machine (and a machinist who has interest in the hobby) fairly soon. If that works out like it should, I won't have as many excuses if I don't get things working. tongue.gif No more of this "Well, maybe in a few months, I'll take a look at that stuff... maybe, if I have time... and the planets align just right... and if I get a fortune cookie that says to do it..." stuff.

Needless to say, I can't wait! ohmy.gif

What this also means is if any of you want to get a kit, I may actually be able to make them instead of just posting drawings. Of course, that is the best-case scenario, and I can't see it getting to that point before mid to late summer. I know there will be demand, but I don't want to sell anyone anything that's not good quality and race proven.

i have been trying to get the cad on these drawn up for fun but i am no good at autocad 2000 so i will install solidworks office and see if that is easier if you want to borrow either of these programs tell me and ill bring the disks on sunday. having the cad stuff makes machine work much easier nowadays.
chaosxxx-nt
there is a guy i found that makes custon heavy flywheels for big fours in tmaxxes he has some wicked ideas here is his email

I have them in dxf format already, complete with dimensions. I'll send them to your email so you can play around with them.

My CAD program (QCAD) doesn't do 3-D, so it'll be cool to see it all rendered up. yeah.gif
Heffe55
When I was in high school I had some AutoCAD time in on the computer in Mechanical Drafting....Im going to get a copy of that program from Will and give it a shot..... Welll at least try to work up some basic skills.... Once I got a good handle on it Ill take a stab in the dark to get some 3D done up for you. There are some simple parts I wanna draw up for the Mugen and then see how much its going to hurt to have them built...lol Oh well in time ......

See you at the track...... and take it easy on the rookie...lol yeah.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
OH PROGRESS, SWEET PROGRESS!!!!

The chips are flying on the engine mount!! It's about half way done, and it looks great! The machinist working on it said it might be done tomorrow, so I'll know more very soon. yeah.gif yeah.gif
chaosxxx-nt
sweet that thing is gonna rock cant wait to see it
Cowboy
Hey DP I'm building one of those 52's and was wondering if you could tell me the installed height on those fs-40 valve springs
Heffe55
lol cant do that just ship it to him with 20.00 and he will hook it up for you..lol

Yo DP I get 10.00 of that...lol

Just kidding Im sure he will let you know when hes on..... yeah.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
If I remember right, I shimmed the springs up 1.5mm. The FS40C springs are quite a bit shorter than the stock springs, but MUCH stiffer, so even with the shims under them, they don't stick up as high (uncompressed, sitting in the head) as the stock springs.

To be honest, I don't know if it's the right amount of preload, but it looks about right, the springs don't bottom out in operation, and when you turn it over by hand, the cam makes a slight click noise as the springs push on the downside of the trailing cam lobe, just like the FS26C does. The stock springs aren't strong enough to do that.

The click is just the gear lash being taken up between the crank worm gear and the cam gear, it's not from anything binding or wearing.

Unfortunately, I don't have a break-in stand, so I won't know if it's right until I get the truck finished, fired up, and run through about a half gallon of fuel.
DP-BuggyBoy

I love this part!

These are different views of the engine installed with its new mount. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
[attachmentid=116][attachmentid=117][attachmentid=118][attachmentid=119]
Next is the dreaded flywheel and clutch.... I think the one on it would probably fit, but it's not big enough to use with a starter box. wink.gif

HAHA... I just noticed the plaque (from Canby) in the background... I never did figure out who's that is... Tim gave my 3rd place to someone else, and I got someone's 7th place. By the time we figured out what happened, the other guy had left the track. So if you see this and it's yours, PM or email me.

FLYWHEEL DRAWING!

This is what I (or most likely my brother) get to cut out on the lathe this weekend:
[attachmentid=122]
Minus the clutch bell, of course.

/update/
That drawing is now a reality, with a few minor changes... I still need to tweak it and the clutch nut a little, but it's going to work. I also need to drill holes for the clutch shoe pins, make some pins, and press them in.

...so, never fear, I could still screw it up. laugh.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
I found out how to cut a keyway in the flywheel this morning... and I think I know how to drill the holes for the clutch shoe pins. Anyone have a 3 shoe kyosho flywheel they don't care about? blink.gif Right now, it looks like I will be buying a new MP5/6/7/7.5/k1/k2/k3/777 flywheel, pressing the pins out of it, and using it as a template to drill holes in my flywheel.

SOOO, if anyone has a boogered up Kyosho 1/8th scale buggy flywheel, let me know. I have a use for it, and you could make a couple bucks. yeah.gif
chaosxxx-nt
i have an ofna flywheel you can have
DP-BuggyBoy
If OFNA flywheels have the same pin spacing and same diameter pins as Kyosho, I'll take it. Anyone know? I know Mike H used to race an OFNA.... can you use Kyosho clutch shoes on an OFNA?

Here's some pictures of the flywheel on the REVO:
[attachmentid=132][attachmentid=133]

Here's one that shows where the cooling fan will go:
[attachmentid=134]

...and yes, the clutch bell sticks out a little bit too far. blink.gif I'm waiting until the 19T clutch bell gets here before I go cutting more stuff. It's a Savage clutch bell, and they seem to have a shorter gear, so it probably won't stick out so far. huh.gif
Mikey Hudson
DP, we always used the Kyosho shoes with the ofna flywheel.
DP-BuggyBoy
Here's what it will look like when it's finished:
[attachmentid=135][attachmentid=136]

...with the body on, of course. laugh.gif
Kinda weird, the engine looks small with the body over it. Don't worry, it won't SOUND small!

DP.....I bet you say that to all the ladies! laugh.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
Heh heh, um... No Butthead, it's an obstacle illusion er um something.
Are you threatening me? laugh.gif laugh.gif
DP-BuggyBoy
Got more parts today! On the left is what the biggest clutch bell and the smallest spur you can buy look like all meshed together and happy. Of course, a 35T Delrin spur is listed on 3racing's website, but all out of stock. Hopefully the 36T Traxxas one will be enough.

On the right is the FS90 muffler in the general neighborhood of where it will be when everything's finished.
